1. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Easily one of the most hotly anticipated titles of 2024 is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second part in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. Picking up after the dramatic ending events of 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, Rebirth aims to reimagine the beloved classic while also expanding on the original story. 

This time around, the game will feature a more open world for players to explore, including iconic locales like Costa del Sol. Combat also gets an upgrade with more playable characters and combo moves. 

Of course, fans are most excited to see how the narrative plays out, especially with the promised expanded role for fan-favorite Zack Fair. All said, Rebirth looks set to deliver a bold new vision that builds on everything that made Remake so special.

2. Dragon’s Dogma 2

Over ten years after the release of Capcom’s cult classic action-RPG Dragon’s Dogma, fans are finally getting a proper sequel. Early footage of Dragon’s Dogma 2 shows a game that keeps the spirit of the original while expanding and refining. 

Your AI companions, known as Pawns, now have additional skills to aid you on quests. On top of that, new classes join the already stellar lineup from the first game. Those who missed out on the original — or just want more — have a lot to be excited for here. Dragon’s Dogma 2 could be the first great Western-style RPG of 2024.

3. Metaphor: ReFantazio

The Persona series has exploded in popularity in recent years thanks to Persona 5 and the upcoming Persona 3 Remake. However, the formula of high schoolers balancing relationships and dungeon crawling is starting to feel repetitive. 

Enter Metaphor: ReFantazio, the newest RPG from Persona developers Atlus. 

Set in a totally original dark fantasy world, ReFantazio looks to deliver all of Atlus’ strengths while finally trying something completely new. Social links and turn-based combat return but with a fresh coat of paint. 2024 will see if Atlus still has the magic.

4. Visions of Mana

It’s been over 15 years since the last original release in Square Enix’s classic Mana RPG series. That changes with Visions of Mana, a new action RPG entry sporting the franchise’s signature vibrant art style. 

Like 2020’s Trials of Mana remake, Visions allows switching between characters on the fly while unleashing combos in real-time combat. 

With over 25 years of history behind it, the Mana series lays claim to some of the best world-building and lore in gaming. Visions of Mana looks to make good use of that while reinvigorating the dormant franchise.

5. Unicorn Overlord

Helmed by legendary developer Vanillaware, Unicorn Overlord pays homage to tactical RPG classics with a splashy new spin. After being deposed, you’ll gather a unique army filled with over 60 potential allies to take back your kingdom. 

Battles play out in real time on grid-based maps, requiring sharp strategy against dangerous foes. 

Vanillaware games always sport standout art direction, but Unicorn Overlord cranks the charm to eleven with its storybook visuals. For fans of SRPG classics like Final Fantasy Tactics, this should prove essential.

6. Princess Peach: Showtime!

• Platform: Nintendo Switch

Everyone’s favorite princess finally snags another starring role in this delightful adventure. When Princess Peach finds herself trapped inside a magical theater, she’s forced to take on various roles, each gifting new outfits and skills. 

We’ve already seen Peach as a swordfighter, detective, chef, and kung-fu master – with likely even more to come! It looks to be a versatile game matching mood and gameplay to each costume. After years confined to damsel status, getting a solo Peach adventure feels long overdue and incredibly refreshing.

7. Avowed

Avowed comes from RPG masters Obsidian Entertainment, known most recently for the critical hit The Outer Worlds. Considered by many to be Obsidian’s take on The Elder Scrolls, Avowed promises first-person exploration and questing with trademark Obsidian wit and creativity. Early footage shows off magic abilities, dazzling vistas, and hints of Eldritch horrors. Set in the same vivid fantasy universe as Pillars of Eternity, Avowed already enjoys strong lore foundations. Xbox fans starved for epic fantasy adventures should be gearing up for this one.

8. Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail

As Final Fantasy XIV closes the book on its first 10 years, Dawntrail kicks off the next era for the MMO juggernaut. The latest expansion whisks Warriors of Light to the unmapped lands of Tural, filled with new tales, jobs, trials, and more than a few surprises. Dawntrail also brings FFXIV’s first full graphical overhaul, ensuring the game keeps pace in a crowded online RPG landscape. With director Naoki Yoshida still at the helm, fans can expect the winning formula of captivating stories and stellar raid content to continue going strong. 9. The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak

After spending several games focused on other nations, Trails Through Daybreak finally sets its sights on The Calvard Republic. Beyond just a new location, Daybreak also acts as a jumping on point for new players with a fresh cast. Veterans can look forward to cameos and connections to past games, however. Daybreak also modernizes aspects like the combat system with quicker, action-focused flow. Whether you’ve followed Trails from the start or want to dive in now, Daybreak looks to begin an exciting new chapter.

10. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

Led by Suikoden series creator Yoshitaka Murayama, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes channels the magic of classic JRPGs. The game’s visuals utilize a gorgeous HD-2D style, fusing retro and modern flair for a tactile diorama effect. 

As an ode to Suikoden, Hundred Heroes lets players gather over 100 unique characters to join their cause. Between nostalgic style, endless recruitable allies and talents behind it, Eiyuden has the makings of a brand new JRPG classic.
